Penn College Teams Second to None in Athletics

When it comes to all-around excellence, Pennsylvania College of Technology athletic teams are second to none.

One national champion, four All-Americans, six conference champions and three conference runners-up: 2007-08 has been one of the greatest years ever for Pennsylvania College of Technology athletic teams, which collectively won 207 of 293 games, a .706 winning percentage. [read story]

Athletic teams at Penn College will join the ranks of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association beginning with the 2008-09 academic year, allowing all to compete for national championships. [read story]

Penn College athletes have four-year eligibility, and most athletic teams compete in the Penn State University Athletic Conference.

The competitive effort shows ... ...on both sides of the battle It was "crazy and insane," said intramural assistant Jeremy R. Bottorf, but, in the end, The Village stood out from the rest of Penn College's residence halls to win the dodgeball tournament. The Village claimed 10 points, but College West took second place in the tournament – enough to hold the lead to win the overall Residence Hall Intramural Cup Competition for the fall semester. Campus View took third in the dodgeball tournament and finished fourth overall, while Rose Street finished fourth in the tournament and third overall. Next semester's RHICC will start Jan. 28, once again with a dodgeball tournament.

Penn College bowlers have won Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association championships for five straight years, and this season they look to make it six. “I think we’re going to do well again. We’re not as deep as we were last year in talent, but we’re going to do quite well. Overall, I’m excited about this season, I really am,” third-year coach Deb Vincenzes said as her team prepares for its opener Thursday hosted by Lehigh-Carbon Community College at Jordan Lanes in Whitehall.

Brad C. Bell, a graphic design student from Harrisburg Juliette K. Yeager, of Hamburg, majoring in physical fitness specialist Blair E. Smith, of South Williamsport, majoring in office information technology: specialized office information emphasis Penn College's Student Athlete Advisory Council has started a new program called “Reading with the Wildcats” in which athletes from the college's 15 varsity sports will go to Sheridan Elementary School and read to the children. Three Wildcats – volleyball player Brad C. Bell and Juliette K. Yeager and Blair E. Smith from the women's soccer team – recently went to Sheridan and read to two first-grade classes.

Seven present or former Penn College cross country runners participated in the 26.2-mile Harrisburg Marathon Sunday and two – Tamara Pavlov of Lewisburg and Jeff Faherty of High Point, N.J. – ran fast enough to qualify for next April’s 113th Boston Marathon. Faherty, a junior landscape/nursery technology major, finished 26th overall among men runners in 3 hours, 58 seconds and won the 20- to 24-year-old age group. A year ago at Harrisburg, Faherty also qualified for Boston, while winning the age 19-under men’s division in 3:07.46. Pavlov, a sophomore business management major, finished 134th overall in 3:31 and was second in the 20-to-24-year-old age group. She needed a 3:40:59 to qualify for her first Boston race.
